Signal Conditioning

A signal conditioner is a device that converts one type of electronic signal into a another type of signal. Its primary use is to convert a signal that may be difficult to read by conventional instrumentation into a more easily read format.

Signal Conditioners are typically linked to transducers - Strain Gauge, Thermocouple, RTD, Thermistor, Silicon Temp, 4-20mA, mV, V, Potentiometer, Quadrature Encoders, Absolute Encoders, Frequency, Filters etc

Amplification
When a signal is amplified, the overall magnitude of the signal is increased. Converting a 0-10mV signal to a 0 -10V signal is an example of amplification.

Electrical Isolation
Electrical isolation breaks the galvanic path between the input and output signal. That is, there is no physical wiring between the input and output. The input is normally tranferred to the output by converting it to an optical or magnetic signal then it is reconstructed on the output. By breaking the galvanic path between input and output, unwanted signals on the input line are prevented from passing through to the output. Isolation is required when a measurement must be made on a surface with a voltage potential far above ground. Isolation is also used to prevent ground loops.

Linearization
Converting a non-linear input signal to a linear output signal. This is common for thermocouple signals.

Cold Junction Compensation
Used for thermocouples. The thermocouple signal is adjusted for fluctuations in room temperature.

Excitation
Many sensors require some form of excitation for them to operate. Strain gages and RTDs are two common examples.

Some Signal Conditioners convert voltage to frequency and then gated counters are used to capture the data, as in OPTO 22 systems.

Most Signal Conditioners are analog in and analog out with conversions, say millivolts in and 4-20mA out or RTD in and +/-5volt out etc.

If you also are looking for signal conditioners with high common mode rejection ratios and excellent normal mode ratios ++ 1500VAC RMS Galvanic isolation, Dataforth makes these.

Dataforth is a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of signal conditioning and data communications products for industrial and institutional markets.

Encoders - Rotary and Linear

Rotary and Linear encoders are a special type of transducer for measuring rotational position or linear distances.

There are two main areas of application for linear encoders:
Measurement
Measurement application include coordinate-measuring machines (CMM), laser scanners, calipers, gear measurement, tension testers, and digital read outs (DROs).

Motion systems
Servo controlled motion systems employ linear encoder so as to provide accurate, high-speed movement. Typical applications include robotics, machine tools, pick-and-place PCB assembly equipment; semiconductors handling and test equipment, wire bonders, printers and digital presses.

Rotary encoders are used in a wide range of applications that require monitoring or control, or both, of mechanical systems, including industrial controls, robotics, photographic lenses, computer input devices such as optomechanical mice and trackballs, controlled stress rheometers, and rotating radar platforms.

MasTec has the largest range of encoders in the industry from a range of suppliers.

  • Incremental Encoders - shaft and hollow shaft
  • Absolute Encoders - shaft and hollow shaft
  • Linear Encoders - Tape
  • Linear Encoders - Cable
  • + Encoder cables
  • + Encoder comms converters
  • + Encoder Shaft couplings
  • + Encoder Generators

Inverter Chargers

An inverter/charger is a combination of an inverter, battery charger and transfer switch into one complete system. When AC power is available, the inverter/charger recharges the batteries.

MasTec Ltd has a full range of Inverter Chargers, and stocks many models for the Marine, Mobile, Automotive and Industrial industries.

For mobile power, marine power, Home Power we recommend a transformer based Inverter charger, as in most cases these devices will be connected to inductive loads.

Featured suppliers:

Quality Advanced Marine and Automotive Power Products.
Designed in the UK

COTEK is a technology-oriented company focusing on developing, designing and manufacturing products

Outstanding product reliability and exceptional service, Tripp Lite has been making Inverter Chargers and Inverters since the early 1990s, both 110 VAC and 230 VAC units

Soltec, an ISO9001 certified company, has been a reputable and leading designer and manufacturer of standard & tailored-made Inverters in Taiwan.

Solid State Relays (SSRs)

MasTec has sold OPTO 22 SSRs since the mid 1990's - we stock in volume and sell in volume.

Opto 22 provides a full range of Power Series relays with a wide variety of voltage (110–575 volts) and current options (3–45 amps).
All Power Series relays feature 4,000 volts of optical isolation, and have a high PRV rating.

Where OPTO 22 products cannot provide a spec match and for some specialised situations we use Power-io, Crydom and other speciality companies.

OPTO 22 can switch up to 575 VAC at 45 amps in a standard hockey puck module. OPTO 22 is not so strong in DC switching and only have low current ranges. We do have other options.

If you are building machines and you need to control AC power, then hockey puck SSRs are excellent as they can be mounted directly to steel cases for heatsinks or if the current is low then use the PCB mount SSRs from OPTO 22.

For distributed SSRs use the OPTO 22 G1, G4 or SNAP products that are backplane mounted.

For DIN Rail SSRs, large SSRs with heatsinks, single and three phase and contactors plus motor starts use Power-io.

Thyristors and IGBT Controllers

Thyristor controllers are designed to control the battery heat of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems and the resistive loads within electric furnaces.

Most of the time Thyristors will be involved when handling high currents and voltages, and often when control over alternating currents is needed. They are also used for power supplies for digital circuits; in case the power supply fails and runs the potential of damaging other components.

MasTec Ltd supplies Controllers from three companies

Jumo
AEG of Germany
CD Automation of Italy.

All are leading world supplier of single phase & three phase Proportional Thyristor controllers & IGBT DC Proportional Power Controllers.
