Unimeasure Products

UniMeasure manufactures a broad line of flexible braided wire actuated linear position and linear velocity transducers. Often referred to as a string pot, a yo-yo pot, a draw wire transducer, a linear position transducer, or a cable extension transducer, the device has proven to be an attractive approach for a multitude of applications in many different industries.

With relatively non-critical alignment requirements, compact size, and ease of installation, wire actuated transducers are the linear position measurement system of choice in applications as diverse as bone densitometers in the medical industry, crash testing in the automobile industry, pump jacks in the crude oil extraction industry and irrigation and flood control in the water management industry.

With a variety of available electrical outputs that include uni or bipolar voltage, 4 to 20 mA current and Encoded digital, UniMeasure linear displacement transducer products provide an extremely cost effective method for linear position and velocity feedback.

How they work…

With the linear displacement, position, and velocity transducer mounted at a fixed position, the wire rope is attached to a moveable object. As movement occurs, the wire rope extends and rotates an internal sensing device to produce an electrical output signal proportional to the position and/or velocity of attached movable object. An internal torsion spring maintains tension on the wire rope and serves as the retraction mechanism for the linear displacement transducer. The position and velocity sensing device may be a precision potentiometer, digital encoder, hall sensing device, or for velocity measurement, a tachometer.

ZX SERIES

The ZX stringpot models offer a 1.5 (38mm) displacement measurement range in an extremely compact LVDT package. Utilizing a long life co-molded potentiometer with essentially infinite resolution, model ZX-PA-1.5 is the worlds smallest stringpot.

In a slightly thicker LVDT package, model ZX-HM-1.5 utilizes a non-contacting internal hall effect sensing device which gives a ratiometric voltage output with a resolution of approximately 0.0016 (0.04mm). With wide operating temperature range, long cycle life and tiny footprint, both ZX string pot models are perfect for displacement measure applications where space is at an absolute premium and maximum performance is required.

FX SERIES

The FX-HM series linear position transducer provides up to 15 (381mm) of measurement range in a subcompact plastic package. With a two point mounting system and a diameter of 1.5 inches, it is ideal for use in areas where space is a premium.

The linear position transducers and displacement sensors employ a non-contacting hall effect internal sensor which permits use in applications where a very high cycle life is required. With an excitation voltage requirement anywhere in the range of 4.9 to 30 volts and a very low current requirement, the unit may easily be battery powered or operated from most standard instrumentation power supplies.

The analog voltage output of nominally 0 to 10 VDC may be easily interfaced to most popular data acquisition, PLC and display devices. Our linear position transducers have a dynamic response capability of up to 25 Hz over a 1.5 range, making it acceptable for use in measurement applications for suspension travel, throttle position, machine mechanism monitoring and many other applications where space restrictions exist.

STANDARD SERIES

The Standard Series consists of a family of cable extensionlinear position and linear velocity transducersin a NEMA 1 (IP-40) housing. The linear transducer mechanism is housed inside of an aluminum cover and attached to an anodized aluminum baseplate with four mounting holes. The linear displacement measurement range determines which of three housing sizes is to be used. All of the possible UniMeasure analog and digital position outputs are offered in the Standard Series. The wire rope exit is perpendicular to the baseplate as shown in the photo but optional side and bottom wire rope exit locations are available. Our linear transducers also come with additional options including nylon jacketed wire ropes, dust wipers, terminal strips, non-standard potentiometers, and alternate connector locations.

HX SERIES

The UniMeasure HX Series consists of a family of environmentally sealed cable extension transducers for the measurement of linear position and/or linear velocity.

The HX models are appropriate for hostile environments where exposure to rain, wash down, or submersion in various liquids are concerns. With standard features such as O-ring seals in all joints, wire rope dust, debris wipers, and rigid two-point mounting systems, the cable extension transducers are perfect for any linear position or linear velocity measurements performed in an adverse environment.

The cable extension transducers are available in two basic package configurations determined by the overall measurement range. Thirty ranges from 0-2 inches to 0-2,000 inches are offered. Electrical outputs include ratiometric voltage divider, bridge circuit, 4-20 mA, 0 to 5 or 0 to 10 VDC, 10 VDC, and quadrature square wave digital. A brief description of each of the series follows.

HXLR SERIES

The UniMeasure HXLR module provides an easy method of converting linear motion to a digital output from nearly any industrial rotary encoder whether incremental or absolute.

Functionally, the module is mounted at a fixed position and the extensible wire rope of the module is attached to a moving element. As movement occurs, the wire rope is extended and rotates a shaft internal to the module which, in turn, rotates the encoder.

The module is provided with suitable adapter plate, shaft coupling and o-ring seal which simplifies attachment of the encoder. With a NEMA 4 rated encoder attached to the environmentally sealed module, the completed assembly is also NEMA 4 capable.

RTX SERIES

The UniMeasure RTX seriesrotary position transducers with analog outputare primarily for use in moderate duty applications in wet or dry environments. The chemical resistant thermoplastic case of the rotary transducer provides NEMA 4 (IP-65) ingress protection for applications where exposure to washdown, rain, oil and other liquids may occur.

The sealed case is achieved through the use of o-rings and a shaft seal. Our rotary transducers have two electrical connection options including a body mounted sealed plastic connector with mating connector or a sealed bulkhead fitting and multi conductor electrical cable of user specified length.

Alternatively, the mating connector may be ordered with electrical cable as a separate item. As an installation convenience, end mounted or radial mounted connection locations are offered. RTX rotary transducers and position sensors are available with analog voltage output from a voltage divider circuit or with 4 to 20 mA current output.
