DAQ systems take Input signals and convert them into bits (numbers) and store them into memory inside the programmable device.

DAQ is a means of inputting and outputing electronic signals to and from the real world, this is why it is also called I/O – Input and Output.
Systems that use DAQ data are automated or programmed devices like PCs, PLCs, PACs, Tablets, Embedded Micros, Industrial Computers, even Win 8, Android & Apple Smart Phones and iPods now.
Many of these instruments can be interfaced directly to programmable devices like Computers, Smart Phones, Tablets etc using various interfacing methods – RS-232/485, Canbus, GPIB, USB, Ethernet & Wifi and Bluetooth Wireless

There are four main types of converters for DAQ.
SAR =Successive Approximation, used for general purpose applications, can be accurate and fast.
Flash – Used for ultra high speed measurement
Integration – Used in high accuracy devices -DMMs.
Sigma Delta as used in PC sound systems and almost all audio equipment. Very accurate, low noise.
Various interfacing means are used to connect DAQ devices to PCs, PLCs, PACs, Micros, Industrial Computing etc.

It was very common a few years back to have one converter and a MUX or multiplexer feeding that one converter to make multichannel systems.
Now that the cost is low for ADC or DAC converters, many DAQ units have converter s on each channel, allowing for simultaneous channel sampling, and it removes a layer of in accuracy the MUX added.
