By combining more than 18 years of experience in the field of non contact measurement with optical triangulation, unique electronics and skilled use of technology, we have developed a competitive range of sensors to conduct all kind of non contact measurements with the highest precision.

The Triangulation Technique is an Ancient Yet Very Accurate Way of Measuring Distance.

What is a distance sensor?

A distance sensor is a device that utilizes a laser and CCD-camera to measure the distance between the sensor and the target object. This high-quality laser sensor employs advanced digital electronics to ensure precise and accurate measurements. It can be used on various surfaces such as asphalt, cardboard, fiber, foam, food, glass, granulate, liquid, metal, paper, plastic, powder, rubber, steel, stone, and wood.

Series of Laser Scanners Performing Profile Measurement in 2D.

The O2DS Z Laser Scanners is a series of laser scanners that specialize in performing profile measurement in 2D. Measurement is achieved by oscillating the triangulation plane over an angle, with a maximum specified angle of 50. These scanners utilize a fine collimated or focused laser beam that diffusely reflects from the surface of various objects. Through the use of a CCD camera and a Digital Signal Processor, the scanners accurately determine the radial distance from the mirror axis to the target surface and maintain the angular reference position.

The O2DS Z-Line covers 8 different measuring ranges. The smallest is 100 mm and largest is 1300 mm. The resolution varies from 0.03 mm to 0.8 mm. The smaller the measuring range is, the better the resolution will be. O2DS Z models are available with measuring frequencies of 2 kHz or 6 kHz.

The O2DS Z-Line is a compact unit with integrated optics, CCD camera, and digital electronics. There is no need for a separate controller unit. The output is a serial interface RS-422 or RS-232 (or optional Ethernet).

The actual interface to the application software is a DLL library for programs running under Windows.

Synchronization: As a rather unique feature the O2DS Z-Scanner is available in synchronized versions where two or more units works together to perform complex 2D/geometric measurements. The working principle is one master scanner unit together with one or more slave units as for example, when four units controls dimensions and shape in tube- or similar productions process.

High Temperature target. To meet this demand, the O2DS family can be modified into High Temperature versions to reach different levels of temperature. Models are named HT (1000C, 1832F), VHT (1300C, 2372F) and VVHT capable of measuring on extreme hot target surfaces up to 2.200C (3920F).

Water-cooled protection house is available as extra. To further expand the usability of O2DS Z-Line scanners for High Temperature applications, we have developed a water-cooled protection house in stainless steel to enclose the sensors.

The sensor is surrounded on all sides except from the backside by 5 water chambers. This ensures a very effective cooling and protection and allow the sensor to operate close the hot targets like white glowing steel.

The applicationswhere the O2DS Z-Scanner family can be used are innumerable. From Steel-, metal and constructionindustryto food and car production everywhere a non-contact precision profile scanning is advantageous.

A few examples where the O2DS scanners are being used:

Food Industry:
Measuring volume of cheese before it is cut out in segment and equal weight.

Metal Industry:
Measuring side profiles of aluminum slabs.

Steel Industry:
Measuring height of large steel slabs instead of thickness from above and below. Measuring diameter of steel tubes.

Car Industry:
Profile measuring tyre sides.

The WHD models are used for detection of punched marker holes close to welding seams in metal sheet production lines like: hot strip mill, cold rolling, continuous sheet galvanizing and steel sheet coiling.

Key Features:

  • Reliable detection of Ø6 mm holes up to 150 km/h.
  • High resistant to ambient light (>70,000 LUX).
  • Dust, mist and vibration tolerant.
  • Detects holes with emitter completely covered by strip.
  • Detects holes with one edge of emitter not covered by the strip.
  • Detects holes with both edges of emitter uncovered by the strip.
  • NO moving parts.
  • Flexible mounting with M6 “swivel in the nut”.

What is an example of a distance sensor in real life?

Our distance measurement sensors are used in wide range of industrial applicationsfrom liquid aluminum level measurement to plywood production, from oil rig control to deformation measurement during crash test of cars. They are used to measure on hot steel slaps, on tire re-threading machines, on wheel balancing machines and a lot more. In short they are used in a wide range of applications where reliability, precision, robustness in harsh environments is required.

Thickness Measurement

Measuring Tension or Slack

Measuring Level on Liquid Metal

Thickness Measurement. An often used feature on the ODS sensors is that they are prepared for thickness measurement. If two sensor are connected to each other they will automatically begin to measure the thickness. For example used to measure the height and width of steel slaps for quality control.

Measurement of Coil

Measurement of Dimension or Height

Measurement of Runout

Measurement of Wear, Vibration, Ovality or Runout. Used for example to measure on tires during retreading or measuring the profile of wheel rims.

Level Measurement of Liquid Metal. We were contacted by a customer that needed to control the level of liquid aluminum in trough for a casting station. Every time new aluminum was pumped up the oxidized aluminum on the surface was pushed away and the surface look like an all most perfect mirror causing an ordinary laser distance sensor stopped working. We developed a special sensor for molten aluminum that is capable to catch the very small amount of diffuse light reflected from the surface.

DSE has developed software that makes it easy to start using our sensors and integrate in your environment. This reduces start-up costs and time.
