POE & POE Products

POE ( Power over Ethernet ) technology is now very mature and still expanding in uses.

MasTec started writing about POE five or so years back.

POE is made possible by the injecting DC Power intosome of the 8 wire in an Ethernet Cable.

There are two types of POE

Mid-span: +48VDC is delivered across the Ethernet cable using the unused pins (4, 5, 7 & amp; 8).

End-span: +48VDC is delivered on on the same pins used for data (1,2,3 and 6).

Usually POE is a high DC voltage > 24, sometimes much higher > 55 VDC.

This injection usually takes place at the Ethernet Switch or with a POE Injector product.

However now there are Computers and PACs that do the DC Power injecting also.

At the far end of the Ethernet Cable an Etherent DC Splitter which brings out the DC and passes through the Ethernet data. The Splitters convert the POE voltage to standard voltages such as 48, 24, 18, 12 or 5 VDC.

It is possible to pump quite a lot of power down an ethernet cable > 100 watts and still have reliability in DC supply.

So imagine you are setting up video survellliance. All the cameras are 12VDC and TCP Gigabit Ethernet for the image data. Just plug the camera into the splitter for the DC power and the ethernet cable and you are done. You do not need to be near AC power to set up the camera, offering great placement freedom.

The same is true of course for DAQ systems that have ethernet data connections, see some of the manufacturerss in the list of suppliers.

POE is very convenient and saves a lot of installation time and money.

And if you are doing DAQ work there is no need for PSUs. Just plug the Remote DAQ into a splitter and ethernet data cable and you are done.

And of course the Ethernet Cable is a great high speed data pipe for DAQ.

I personally have had a LabVIEW system controlling 4 DAQ units running at full data rates of >100KHz each and the Laptop connected to the DAQ via a POE Ethernet switch, doesn't blink.

MasTec has used POE Texas 5VDC USB Splitter products in its last project site to get the 5VDC to run the TCP DAQ units. The 5VDC power is supplied through the DAQ's USB Port.

The three words: Sensors, Transducers, Gauges

Sensors are often regarded as digital devices with On-Off outputs. Examples are Inductive and capacitive devices to detect presence rather than read values.

Transducers are able to measure through a range and be calibrated to give Engineering unit of measure but need signal conditioners and readouts.

Gauges are Transducer with signal conditioners, readouts and are calibrated to engineering units, so are immediately useful.

A good example of Gauges is the Karl Deutsch products or Centec's products.

LFEs = Laminar Flow Elements

Put a good quality differential bi-directional Manometer across the LFE and you get a Flow output that is almost puely linear across the LFEs range.

A two point polynomial straightens the output right out. Errors of 3% without and 1% with correction.

MasTec has used these Meriam LFE products in systems for many years.

Meriam is the USA's leading LFE makers

MasTec can assist you in software and calibration of LFEs also.

DIN Rail Conditioners

Industrial Grade Conditioning with Galvanic Isolation and Filtering in one module

Backplane Conditioners

Instrumentation Grade Conditioning with Galvanic Isolation and Filtering in one module

MasTec has used these Dataforth Modules since the 80's and they do not fail and they do not loose calibration over extend periods.

There is no way around the need for galvanic isolation in Instrumentation or Industrial Measurement and Control Systems if you want reliable measurements and control.

The Dataforth range is very broad and is signal and transducer specific.

For excitation power with ppm stability, these modules are superb for Strain, RTD

Filters are either wide or tight, so in process systems typically less than 4 HZ.

Have Long Cable runs

Common Mode Rejection Ratios are 160 db on some.

Normal mode Rejection ratios for 50Hz very high on low frequency modules

DIN Rail Modules are 24 VDC Powered for standard industrial DIN Systems.

Backplanes are all 5VDC Powered for standard Instrumentation Systems

The Modules are either 2 or 3 port Isolation.

The modules are not sensitive to PSU Voltage supply noise with in reason and have a broad supply range.

Do you want to convert 4-20mA to voltage or vice versa?

Do you want to translate low voltage to higher with filtering and isolation.

Take millivolts to volts, a whole range of modules

Do you need to translate high voltage down to lower measurement voltages, use the Attentuator modules.

TCs of all types and modules linearise for you so you do not need to use software polynomials.

If you are using USB or TCP DACs for control, use an isolated output module, it will stop you blowing those very expensive 16 Bit DAQ channels if something goes wrong.

Every Project MasTec has produced in the last 10 years has had Dataforth modules.

  LabVIEW Books
Four Short PDF Books
How to program more effectively in LabVIEW

A 6th Book is planned to show how to include Editable Operator Messaging Inside State engines from files loaded at runtime.

The current 5 books introduce a more thorough development of LCOP - LabVIEW Component Object Programming methods.

Recently an early legacy piece of software built using these techniques was upgraded to a new DAQ system using Distributed IO on Modbus TCP from the older USB DAQ

This was an extensive upgrade plus many new features were added.

Report :-

This technique makes for an orderly upgrade, that is easy due to the design methods used.

This method makes extensive use of Front Panel TABs to expose different aspects of the Application as Tab groups, In each Tab there are Clusters as Type Defs and the sub Apps are driven by Enums as Type Def Verbs inside simple state engines.

It has a built in Cluster Editor that runs either in the Program that allows remote adjustment of programs configuration files.

Using LCOP methods will simplify and establish design development plus stabilise your programs. It even make installs and maintenance easier.

Updating and expanding programs then follows a standard pattern already in the program design.

This method delineates Public and Private data clearly.

This is critical for Component Design and for low coupling and best Cohension.

Book 1 "Hidden Data",

that is, cleaning up LV Program's by Removing Constants from Diagrams and putting them in Configuration Files for Loading at runtime.

This method does not use ini files but a far more robust LabVIEW centric method, not seen in other literature. It also cleans up Diagrams and Self Documents.

Book 2 "Abstraction",

that is, removing complexity in the top layer of a LabVIEW diagram by building Abstracted Message Driven LV Components.

This shows how to build Message driven (Test Verbs) Abstracted named (noun) State Engine Components that are safe & robust. It also leads to better cohension of course and no/low coupling.

Book 3 "Real Time Cluster Constants Editor"

that is, Removed Diagram Constants that are loaded at Run Time from a config file, can now be edited, in situ, inside the Program /or its Component while it runs, allowing tuning of programs in Real Time.

Changes made to the Constants by the editor can also be saved back into their original configuration files at run time. This addition of the Real Time Editor removes the need to exit a component or program to edit constants.

Book 4 "Low Frequency Real Time Control",

is about how to use USB DAQ, DIO and DAC to control an Hydraulic RAM for Testing a UUT.

It is a close look at how to use State Engine for Control.

Simple but useful for anyone wanting to do closed loop control.

It embodies many of the LCOP methods discussed in the other three books.

Book 5 "An Off Line Constant Cluster and Calibration Editor"

For Editing, Loading and Saving Cluster Constants" and also built in into the editor "Adjust Calibration and System Data" off Line for easing commissioning. Plus more helpful bits.

This includes a section on setting up all Paths for an application as a large Cluster Constant, again easing commissioning, Typically a large Application will have in excess of 30 Paths to manage.

MasTec Training
"LabVIEW for Everyone"

MasTec recently under took a 4 day Training course for 15 Academics, (Professors and Grad Students), at one of Oceania's largest universities.

The focus was on getting students to the point where they can undetake projects by the end of the course. A big ask. However, the focus was not on how to use all the bits inside LabVIEW to make software but the development of strategies to allow projects to be undertaken.

The MasTec Instructor has trained all over the globe and has taught over 2000 students.

He will also come to your site and do training with your LabVIEW team, using traditional or these new LabVIEW methods MasTec has developed.

Keep up with MasTec's latest LabVIEW Notes

MasTec Projects

Over the last year MasTec has completed 6 major projects in sites through out NZ. Several hundred hours of programming work has been completed, as well as many hundreds of hours of commissioning, site management, and installation.

All these projects involved LabVIEW at the core. However, many of these projects also include PACs, PLCs, Process Controllers, with peripherals like Servos, Actuators, VSDs, Water measurement and control, Hydraulic Control and other real world systems.

MasTec has several large projects on its books, spread out over about 3-4 years.

There are gaps in this schedule.

Many sites still run XP and Win 7 for their LABs and Production areas. MasTec is still undertaking new projects in legacy LV 6.1 /7.1/8.2 and 8.6 systems.

Major new projects are still undetaken in LabVIEW 7.1 that run in Windows 7 32 Bit OS, very successfully. LabVIEW 7.1 is still (in our opinion) the best LabVIEW ever released. Fast, efficient and stable. Win 7 32 bit OS will be available for some time. Most large corporations are still running Win 7 due to its excellent stability and IT staffs familiarity and history.

However, other projects using from LabVIEW 2010 up to the present version of 2015 SP1, which is good, but very processor hungry and much slower to develop in. We only recommend I7s CPUs with this software with SSDs for the OS and LV.

Announcement >>> Opportunity

The MD of MasTec has recently decided it is time to realign his life after 50 years of technology, to go horse riding with his wife and dogs Polly, Lilly and newly arrived Freddie.

If you have an interest in owning this important technology company, now is the time to act and start communcation.
